Benelux Patent Platform

The Benelux Patent Platform is a large-scale project implemented for the Benelux countries (Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxemburg) in the field of patents. It constitutes a set of IT applications and infrastructure for supporting the establishment, processing and tracking of each of the key patent elements throughout all the stages of the patent life-cycle.

The Benelux Patent Platform is at your disposal since the end of 2014 and helps you to retrieve and check the validity of Belgian patents very easily.

The experiment

The prepregs and composites that are discussed in this article have been prepared by impregnating UD glass fibers with 3 types of UV curable resin formulations via padding followed by UVA-LED curing.
The 3 types of formulations were all 100 % systems and polyurethane, epoxy and polyester based. We determined the flexural modulus and strength of the composites and compared the results and we examined the influence of the monomer concentration on the flexural properties of the epoxy composite.

Biobased textile coating and finishing

Centexbel develops antibacterial and antifungal textiles based on biological coatings & finishes

In the Bio-AmiCoFitex project finalised at the end of 2014, Centexbel developed bio-based antibacterial and antifungal textile finishes and coatings complying with the criteria of the new biocide regulation that urges the textile to apply non-hazardous alternative biocides. Biocides are used to prevent the growth of microorganisms.

EPO allows reduced fees for certain applicants

A revised system for language-related fee reductions pursuant to Rule 6 EPC was introduced by the EPO on 1 April 2014. Under the previous system, applicants of EPC countries having an official language (admissible-non-EPO language) other than English, French or German were entitled to certain fee reductions irrespective of their size. The revised system is designed to support small applicants by limiting the size of companies eligible for fee reductions.

New peak of patent filings at the EPO in 2014

Although the precise numbers are still being worked on, indications are that we saw over 270 00 filings last year, an increase of approximately 3%. This is in line with the trend observed over the last four years with annual increases between 2% and 4%. Of course, there are big differences when looking more closely at the geographical origin of those filings.

Six new substances on REACH candidate list

On 17 december 2014 the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) added six new substances to the candidate list for authorisation, now including 161 substances.

Only the Candidate List published on the ECHA website is deemed authentic. Companies may have immediate legal obligations following the inclusion of a substance in the Candidate List on this website including in particular Articles 7, 31 and 33 of the REACH Regulation.

PTT yarn extrusion in the Durbio project for Durable Biobased Plastics

Polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT) is a linear aromatic polyester derived from the polycondensation of 1,3-propanediol (trimethylene glycol, 3G, or PDO) and, either terephthalic acid (PTA), or dimethyl terephthalate (DMT). The trimethylene glycol monomer derives from a renewable route, resulting in a content of renewable carbon in the polymer of 20 to 37 wt%.
