Harmful substances in children's clothing

Zurich (hm) In its study "A little story about the monsters in your closet" published in mid January, the environmental organisation Greenpeace criticised numerous discoveries of harmful substances in children's clothing from renowned brand manufacturers. In connection with this, the OEKO-TEX® Association expressly states that children's clothing that meets the strict requirements of OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 does not pose any health risks for consumers.

Protecting trade secrets

EU proposal

What are trade secrets?

This is key information that companies, researchers and innovators in general keep confidential – either within their own organisation or within networks of partners – to obtain or keep a competitive advantage.
Broadly, trade secrets are 2 types of information:

  • technical (manufacturing processes, recipes, chemical compounds, etc.)
  • commercial (lists of customers, results of marketing studies, product launch data, etc.).

Patents positive effect on profitability of SMEs

Applying for patents for inventions is definitely lucrative for SMEs. Although it is often assumed that the advantages do not outweigh the disadvantages, patents have a positive effect on the profitability of SMEs. This has been revealed by research conducted by the University of Groningen and the KU Leuven.
Just as it does for large firms, patent protection enables SMEs to generate more revenues from new products or services, and thus realise significantly larger profit margins. The costs involved in applying for and renewing patent protection do not counteract the positive effects.

Intellectual Property Invoice Scams

There is an explosion of bogus invoices for "International Trademark Registration" that are sent to entities that have recently registered trademarks. Close inspection of the invoices will reveal that the invoices are actually for inclusion of the registered trademark in a database maintained by the entity issuing the invoice. Inclusion of a trademark in such databases establishes no international rights, and inclusion provides no value to the trademark owner.
