Europese normen met betrekking tot geotextiel en geotextielverwante producten worden ontwikkeld in het CEN/TC 189 comité - Geosynthetics terwijl de internationale normen ontwikkeld worden door ISO/TC 221 Geosynthetics.
De jongste 20 jaren hebben beide comités meer dan 80 normen en normamendementen gepubliceerd met betrekking tot geotextiel (en geotextielverwante producten) en geosynthetische barrières.
Deze gids beperkt zich tot geotextiel en geotextielverwante producten, en laat de geosynthetische barrières (geomembranen) buiten beschouwing.
De Europese geotextielnormen kunnen grofweg onderverdeeld worden in productspecificaties (in verband met toepassingen) en testmethodes. De gids brengt een overzicht van de inhoud van de productspecificaties en een korte beschrijving van de testmethodes.
