MACOBIO is part of the project cluster FEDER 2014-2020 - Low Carbon Footprint Materials - addressing the validation of natural resources for the production of novel biobased materials. MACOBIO is aimed at the design of 100% biobased composite materials, including innovative thermoplastic and thermoset biobased matrixes, reinforced with natural fibres.

Low carbon footprint materials are a means to meet the ecological and societal challenges. The aim of the project is to develop biobased polymers made from biomolecules extracted from different local biomass resources.

Thermoplastic and thermoset composite matrixes from biobased resins need to be reinforced with short or long fibres. Centexbel creates and proposes to its project partners several textile reinforcing structures made by multilayered interlock braiding and by 2D and 3D weaving techniques; in addition we propose several surface functionalisations to improve the affinity between the natural fibres and the resins.

The project has enabled us to acquire hightech equipment to perform our research in the field of highly biobased products which properties are comparable with conventional - less green - materials. Their marketing will reduce the negative environmental impact.
