Spun Eco Yarn
The project intends to increase the product range of spun PLA yarns and blend yarns and to improve their properties. Only if high-quality biobased yarns are obtained with properties comparable to non-biobased yarns, an increase of the implementation of biobased spun yarns in a number of applications can be expected.
The industry should also be able to carry out the spinning process in economical relevant conditions. The spinning speed and output should be at the same level as for example PET based blend spun yarns, with at the same time control of the quality of the produced yarns.
A further goal is to prevent or minimise the degradation phenomena taking place during the spinning process of yarns starting from staple fibres. This requires that the exact cause of the often observed fast degradation of PLA fibres is determined. The PLA fibre properties can then be improved via optimisation of the extrusion process of the PLA yarns (to avoid hydrolysis of the polyester bondages taking place during extrusion), and/or adaptation of the spinning process (to avoid mechanical damages of the yarns and heat evolution during processing). This will result in fibres with better
properties (e.g. strength) and textiles with a longer lifetime.
The final goal is to develop fully biobased spun yarns and derived products with comparable properties as existing non-biobased products (e.g. PET/viscose or PET/cotton blend yarns), resulting in a fast implementation of the developed products.
