Natural fibers are fibers that are produced by geological processes, by plants and/or animals. The earliest proof of humans using fibers is the discovery of wool and dyed flax fibers in a prehistoric cave in the Republic of Georgia dating back to 36,000 BC. Natural fibers can be found in a variety of textures. They can be processed into nonwoven fabrics such as felt or paper or, after spinning into yarns, into woven cloth.  Apart from economic considerations, the usefulness of a fiber for commercial purposes is determined by such properties as length, strength, pliability, elasticity, abrasion resistance, absorbency, and various surface properties.

In this breakfast session we will discuss the different types of natural fibers, their properties and their potential applications!

Programme

Natural fibers: definitions and classification

What are natural fibers? How to classify them into different groups based on their origin? On overview will be given of the different natural fibers.

From plant to fiber: transformation from plant into fiber product

In this presentation we will show how the materials are transformed into fiber materials and which fiber properties can be obtained for the different materials.

Textile and other potential applications

Natural fibers can be transformed into textile products with unique properties such as weight, soft texture. Textiles are of course not the only applications in which natural fibers are used. We will show some potential application where natural fibers can bring an added value.

Composite applications

Natural fibers can be used for high-tech applications, such as composite. Compared to composites reinforced with glass fibers, composites with natural fibers have advantages such as lower density, better thermal insulation, and reduced skin irritation. Further, unlike glass fibers, natural fibers can be broken down by bacteria once they are no longer in use.
