Context

SAFEADD focuses on the development of bio-based, safe and sustainable additives for plastics and textiles. Across all developments, sustainability, safety and performance are central.

We replace fossil-based additives – which are often toxic and persistent – with safe and sustainable alternatives that fully comply with applicable regulations, including REACH.

In this way, we actively contribute to more environmentally friendly materials without compromising on quality.

In addition, strong emphasis is placed on performance optimisation.

The newly developed additives deliver at least equivalent, and often superior, performance compared to fossil-based counterparts, while remaining recyclable.

Their performance will be evaluated in concrete demonstrators, with the aim of attracting the interest of SMEs and accelerating future market introduction.

Objectives

With SAFEADD, we pursue the following objectives:

  • Expansion of the market for sustainable additives by accelerating the transition away from environmentally harmful substances.
  • Strengthened cooperation with SMEs through an innovative voucher system that stimulates collaboration between knowledge institutions and companies.
  • Support for the circular economy by developing additives suitable for recycling and biodegradation, thereby reducing waste streams.
  • Improved public health by reducing the use of toxic additives in consumer products.
  • Stimulation of innovation and economic growth by promoting the development of green chemistry and advanced materials.

SAFEADD aims to create a lasting positive impact on industry, the environment and society.

Cross‑border partnerships

Collaboration between research and knowledge institutions and companies is crucial for the development of safe and sustainable additives, as both parties contribute complementary roles and resources required to translate innovative ideas into concrete, scalable solutions.

Without cooperation between the research capacity of knowledge institutions and the market orientation and scalability of companies, sustainable innovations often remain confined to the laboratory or result in incomplete market propositions.

As the additives market is strongly internationally oriented and serves applications across diverse sectors such as plastics and textiles, cross-border cooperation is essential. Only by pooling expertise can safety be ensured and market acceptance accelerated.

Moreover, cross-border cooperation brings together knowledge, market access and regulatory expertise, enabling high-quality innovations to be realised faster, more efficiently and with greater impact in the international additives market.
