The Problem

This invention introduces a breakthrough in the field of protective textiles, specifically engineered for high-performance applications such as flame-resistant clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE). Designed with both safety and sustainability in mind, the textile features a multi-layered structure that not only enhances protection but also allows for easy separation of layers—making recycling significantly more efficient.

Protective textiles are widely used in outdoor sportswear and PPE, including gear for firefighters. Traditional solutions often rely on flame-retardant coatings, heat-resistant yarns, or layered constructions to meet safety standards. However, these multi-layered textiles typically pose challenges in recycling due to the difficulty of separating the layers. Additionally, thermal and moisture-regulating properties are often underemphasized, reducing comfort and usability.

The Solution

The invention solves these issues by introducing a novel textile composed of two distinct layers—each made from synthetic yarns—interconnected by a removable binding yarn. This binding yarn, which can be of animal or plant origin, enables the layers to be separated through chemical or physical processes, facilitating recycling and promoting circularity in textile production.

Preferably, the textile is manufactured using advanced 3D weaving techniques, ensuring structural integrity while maintaining flexibility and comfort. The use of flame-retardant aramid yarns provides exceptional heat resistance, making the textile ideal for demanding environments such as firefighting.

Sustainable Design

In one embodiment, the binding yarn is made from plant-based fibers such as cotton, hemp, bamboo, jute, or flax. Cotton, for example, can be dissolved in acidic solutions, allowing for efficient separation. Combining different plant fibers can further enhance the textile’s properties, offering a tailored balance of strength, flexibility, and biodegradability.

Advantages

  • Enhanced Protection: The multi-layered design increases thickness and density, offering superior insulation and mechanical resistance compared to single-layer textiles.
  • Comfort & Performance: Amide-based yarns provide excellent moisture-wicking, abrasion resistance, while keeping the textile lightweight and breathable.
  • Recyclability: The removable binding yarn allows for easy disassembly of layers, supporting sustainable practices and material reuse.
  • Structural Integrity: The binding yarn ensures the layers are securely held together during use, yet can be efficiently dissolved when recycling is needed.
  • User Comfort: Despite its protective capabilities, the textile remains light and flexible, ensuring freedom of movement and wearability in high-stress environments.
