Centexbel backs French regulation of (Ultra) Fast Fashion

As the French Senate passes a landmark bill targeting ultra-fast fashion platforms like Shein and Temu with eco-taxes, advertising bans, and influencer restrictions, Centexbel advances solutions that address the root of the problem: toxic substances, unsustainable production, and textile waste.

R&D

Our coordination of the Horizon Europe CISUTAC project exemplifies our commitment to circularity. The initiative develops large-scale European value chains for post-consumer polyester recycling, focusing on fashion and workwear. It promotes reuse, second-hand shopping, and fibre-to-fibre recycling, with expected CO₂ reductions of several hundred kilotons annually and €250 million in new business opportunities.

Beyond recycling, Centexbel’s REACH4Textiles project has exposed the widespread presence of hazardous chemicals in fast fashion items, particularly those from low-cost platforms. Tests revealed concerning levels of substances like formaldehyde and heavy metals, often exceeding EU safety thresholds. These findings underscore the urgency of stricter regulation and consumer awareness.

Testing

Drawing on multiple test campaigns, we have identified that the low-cost advantage of ultra-fast fashion often conceals significant chemical safety and environmental compliance risks. This underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of REACH requirements and improved traceability of imported materials, both to safeguard EU markets and to ensure fair competition for European manufacturers.
