The Rise of the Debate on Harmful Substances in Cheap Imported Goods
Recent research, as reported by VRT NWS, shows that jewelry from popular Asian webshops often contains heavy metals such as cadmium and lead - substances that are carcinogenic and far exceed legal limits. However, this problem is not limited to jewelry. Toys, clothing, accessories, and household items from the same platforms also frequently fail to meet European safety standards.
Why is this a problem?
Chemical substances such as phthalates, PFAS, and heavy metals (e.g. cadmium, lead) are often found in cheap products.
Children are particularly at risk due to toys and textiles that come into direct contact with their skin or mouth. This is exactly where the OEKO-TEX® label makes a strong difference! In addition, the European Toy Safety Directive is being amended to further improve the (chemical) safety of toys. This directive is closely monitored by our certification manager, Inge De Witte.
European inspections show that 1 in 4 imported products does not comply with EU chemical legislation REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals). Products from China and other non-EU countries perform especially poorly in compliance, as shown in this video:
