Shaping European standards for circular and recyclable fishing gear
About CEN/TC 466
CEN/TC 466 "Circularity and Recyclability of Fishing Gear and Aquaculture Equipment" develops European standards that support the circularity and recyclability of plastic-based materials used in fishing gear and aquaculture equipment.
The committee's scope excludes standardization work related to fish processing, fish packaging, fish food products, and materials or equipment covered by other CEN Technical Committees.
The standards developed by CEN/TC 466 can be consulted on the CEN-CENELEC website.
New Working Group 4: Information Sharing
During its latest plenary meeting, CEN/TC 466 established a new Working Group 4 (WG4) "Information Sharing".
The group's primary task is to revise and merge the following standards into a single document:
• EN 17988-2: User manuals and labelling
• EN 17988-6: Requirements and guidelines for digitalization of information of components of fishing gear and aquaculture equipment
What's on the agenda?
WG4 will focus on improving how information is communicated throughout the lifecycle of fishing gear and aquaculture equipment.
Key topics include:
- User information and user manuals
- Product labelling
- Digitalization of product information
- Information management in support of circularity and recyclability objectives
The working group may also explore how emerging technologies can support these objectives, including:
- Digital Product Passports
- Digital tagging and identification technologies
- Future applications of AI

Experts and stakeholders with an interest in circularity, product information, labelling, and digitalization are invited to join the Belgian Mirror Committee for CEN/TC 466 and/or participate as an expert in the newly established Working Group 4 "Information Sharing".
