This test is designed to address the dangers associated with toys that can expand substantially if swallowed. Such toys or parts of these toys, if swallowed, are considered to lead to fatal accidents as they can cause blockages of the intestines.

Principle and further testing

  • After measuring the maximum dimensions of the toy or any of its components, it is completely submerged during a predefined period.
  • The item is removed by means of a pair of tongs. If the item cannot be removed because of insufficient mechanical strength, it is considered to pass this test.
  • After allowing the water adhering to the toy or component to drain, the item is re-measured.

After this treatment, the toy is submitted to the small parts cylinder test.
