ASTM D1230-22

Principle

All fabrics made of natural or regenerated cellulose, as well as many made from other natural or man-made fibers, are combustible. Some combustible fabrics when used for clothing are potentially dangerous to the wearer because of such factors as ease of ignition, flame spread time, amount of heat released, and design of the garment. 

This test method covers the evaluation of the flammability of textile fabrics as they reach the consumer for apparel items other than children's sleepwear or protective clothing, measuring

  • ease of ignition
  • flame spread time

Test Method

The ASTM D1230-22 standard provides a detailed and standardized method for determining the flammability of textiles used in apparel. This test method is crucial for assessing how rapidly a fabric burns when exposed to an open flame under controlled conditions, helping to identify materials that pose a fire hazard.

The test method is known as the 45-Degree Flammability Test. It is designed to simulate a scenario where a small ignition source—such as a match or lighter—comes into contact with fabric at an angle, which is more reflective of real-world incidents.

Step-by-step outline of the process:

  1. Specimen Preparation:
    • Fabric specimens are cut to a standard size (5 inches × 6 inches).
    • They are conditioned in a controlled environment (70°F and 65% relative humidity) for at least 24 hours before testing.
  2. Test Apparatus:
    • The fabric is mounted in a metal frame at a 45-degree angle.
    • A standardized ignition source—a small flame—is applied to the lower edge of the specimen for one second.
  3. Flame Propagation Measurement:
    • The time it takes for the flame to travel a distance of 5 inches (from the point of ignition) is recorded.
    • If the fabric burns too quickly, it's classified as hazardous.
  4. Classification:
    Based on the results, textiles are classified into one of three flammability classes under the Flammable Fabrics Act (FFA):
    • Class 1 (Normal Flammability): Acceptable for clothing use.
    • Class 2 (Intermediate Flammability): Typically applicable only to raised fiber surface fabrics.
    • Class 3 (Rapid and Intense Burning): Not acceptable for use in apparel.

The ASTM D1230-22 test method is widely used in various sectors, including:

  • Apparel Manufacturing: To ensure fabrics used in garments meet federal flammability safety requirements.
