Principle
The standard specifies a method to determine the initial circumferential tensile wall strength (also called hoop tensile strength) of GRP pipes. This property reflects the pipe’s ability to withstand internal pressure loads by resisting tension around its circumference.
- A section of pipe is subjected to an internal hydrostatic pressure until failure (burst or rupture),
- The hoop stress at failure is calculated to assess the pipe’s tensile strength in the circumferential direction.
Our high pressure test bench makes it possible to validate composite liners for urban pipes under realistic and extreme conditions. Thanks to the investment, made in the SFP Liner project, we are significantly improving the quality control, certification and material validation of innovative pipe solutions.
Mechanical structure:
- Robust test setup with adjustable holders to securely fix test pieces (liners) during the test.
Test capacity:
- Supports samples with outer diameters of 150 mm and 300 mm.
Pressure system:
- High-pressure pump that injects water up to a pressure of 120 bar.
- Automatic pressure build-up until material failure (burst point).
Control and measurement system:
- Real-time monitoring of pressure, temperature and time.
- Data collection for failure analysis and material performance.
Objective:
- To determine the burst pressure and behaviour of composite liners under internal pressure loads.
Test Method
Sample
- A straight, representative section of GRP pipe (length depends on pipe diameter, typically 2–3 × DN),
- The sample must be free from damage, defects, or irregularities.
Procedure
- Condition the specimen (if required),
- Seal the ends of the pipe section to create a closed vessel,
- Fill the pipe with water (or another appropriate fluid),
- Gradually apply internal hydrostatic pressure at a controlled rate (usually so that failure occurs within 60 to 70 seconds),
- Record the maximum pressure at failure,
- Calculate the hoop tensile strength
