Principle

The principle of EN 343-5.1.3.5 is to assess the water resistance durability of protective clothing materials after undergoing mechanical stress, specifically flexing. It ensures that the material retains its waterproof qualities even after wear and movement, simulating real-life use conditions.

Testing Procedure 

1. Pre-treatment by Flexing (Conditioning):

  • The fabric sample is subjected to repeated flexing using a flexing device (e.g., the Bally flexometer or equivalent).
  • The flexing simulates repetitive movements or bending of the fabric during actual use.
  • Standard conditions:
    • Typically 9,000 cycles of flexing (this may vary slightly depending on the device).
    • Performed under standard atmospheric conditions (20±2°C and 65±5% RH).

2. Water Penetration Resistance Test (Post-Flexing):

  • After flexing, the sample is tested for water penetration resistance using a hydrostatic head test (usually based on ISO 811).
  • Water pressure is gradually applied to one side of the fabric.
  • The pressure level at which water penetrates the other side is recorded.
  • This test evaluates how well the fabric retains its waterproof properties after being stressed.

3. Classification:

  • Based on the hydrostatic pressure result, the material is classified under EN 343 waterproofness levels (e.g., Class 1, 2, or 3, with Class 3 being the most resistant).
