Principle

ASTM D1388 defines a method for determining the bending stiffness of fabrics using the cantilever test. The goal is to assess a fabric’s resistance to bending under its own weight, which reflects its drapeability, hand feel, and suitability for specific end-uses. The stiffness value helps distinguish between soft, flexible textiles and rigid, structured materials.

Testing Method

The cantilever test involves placing a fabric strip on a horizontal platform, allowing it to project over an edge. The strip is advanced until the overhanging portion bends under gravity to form a fixed angle (usually 41.5°). The length required to reach this angle is measured and used to calculate the bending length and flexural rigidity.

  • Requires accurate sample preparation (specific width and conditioning).
  • Calculations yield stiffness in terms of bending length (cm) and flexural rigidity (mg·cm).
