Principle

This standard specifies methods to determine the stretch properties of fabrics woven from stretch yarns, particularly in the weft or warp directions. It evaluates how much a fabric stretches when a force is applied and how well it recovers after being stretched.

The main properties assessed are:

  • Stretch under load
  • Growth (permanent elongation)
  • Recovery after stretch

These are critical for apparel comfort, fit, and performance, especially in activewear, denim, and form-fitting garments.

Test Methods

1. Stretch Under Load

  • Measures the percentage extension when a specified load is applied.
  • A strip of fabric is subjected to a tensile force for a defined time (typically 1 minute), and the extension is measured.

2. Fabric Growth (Residual Elongation)

  • After the load is removed, the residual elongation is measured after a recovery period (typically 1 minute).
  • This indicates how much of the stretch becomes permanent (doesn’t return).

3. Fabric Recovery

  • Measures how much of the original length the fabric recovers after the force is removed.
  • Expressed as a percentage of recovery from the maximum stretch.
