ISO 11378-2:2001

Principle

The purpose of this test is to determine how easily textile floor coverings become soiled under controlled laboratory conditions. It serves as a valuable tool for evaluating the performance of various floor covering materials and finishes in resisting soiling. Additionally, the test can be used to assess the impact of different cleaning chemicals and equipment on the degree of soiling. Applicable to all types of unused textile floor coverings, the method specifically focuses on soiling behavior without the influence of abrasive wear or changes in texture.

Test Method:

  • The test involves applying a standard artificial soiling compound to the floor covering sample.
  • The sample is then subjected to a controlled drum test, which simulates soiling under specific conditions.
  • The degree of soiling is assessed after the test by comparing the soiled area with a grey scale.

  • Standard Artificial Soil: The test uses a specific composition of artificial soil to ensure consistent and reproducible results.
  • Drum Test: This test method involves using a drum apparatus to agitate the sample and apply the soiling compound.
  • Grey Scale: the change in color or appearance of the sample after soiling is assessed using a grey scale, according to ISO 105-A02.
  • Extension of Scope: The test can be adapted to evaluate the effects of various factors, such as fiber finishes, cleaning chemicals, and cleaning equipment.
