Scope

EN 12149:1997 - Wallcoverings in roll form - Determination of migration of heavy metals and certain other elements, of vinyl chloride monomer and of formaldehyde release applies to wallcoverings in roll form and specifies three test methods to assess environmental safety by measuring the release or migration of potentially harmful substances.

Test A: Migration of Heavy Metals and Certain Other Elements

Principle

Simulates ingestion conditions to determine the migration of soluble elements such as:

  • Antimony
  • Arsenic
  • Barium
  • Cadmium
  • Chromium
  • Mercury
  • Lead
  • Selenium

Test Method

  1. Sample Preparation: Cut wallcovering into small squares (approx. 6 mm × 6 mm).
  2. Extraction: Soak 1 g of sample in 50 ml of hydrochloric acid at 37°C.
  3. pH Adjustment: Ensure pH is between 1.0 and 1.5.
  4. Shaking & Incubation: Shake for 60 minutes, then let stand for another 60 minutes at 37°C.
  5. Filtration: Filter through a 0.45 µm filter.
  6. Analysis: Determine metal content using a method with a detection limit ≤ 1/10 of the specified limit.

Application

Used to assess the safety of wallcoverings in environments where human contact or ingestion risk exists, especially in homes, schools, and healthcare facilities.

Test B: Determination of Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM)

Principle

Measures the residual amount of vinyl chloride monomer, a known carcinogen, in PVC-based wallcoverings.

Test Method

  • Typically involves gas chromatography to detect and quantify VCM.
  • Samples are conditioned and extracted under controlled conditions.

Application

Ensures compliance with health regulations for PVC wallcoverings, particularly in indoor environments where off-gassing could pose risks.

Test C: Determination of Formaldehyde Release

Principle

Quantifies the amount of formaldehyde released from wallcoverings, which can cause respiratory issues and allergic reactions.

Test Method

  • Uses a modified WKl method.
  • Formaldehyde is extracted and measured, often via spectrophotometry or chromatography.

Application

Important for evaluating indoor air quality and ensuring products meet low-emission standards, especially in green building certifications.
