What is the Industrial Symbiosis Day Flanders?

Industrial Symbiosis (IS) Day Flanders is one‑day, action‑oriented event designed to spark collaboration between industries, public authorities, and research organisations. Its purpose is to transform waste streams into valuable resources by identifying concrete symbiosis opportunities and showcasing the activities and results of the SYMBA project.

The IS Day act as catalyst for cross‑sector innovation, helping participants move from ideas to practical partnerships. IS Day Flanders has a clear thematic focus, concentrating on specific resource flows and material streams that are particularly relevant to the regional context, namely textiles, plastics and packaging.

Examples on cross-sectorial thematics:

  • Textile renaissance: link textile industries with packaging and construction sectors to reuse
textile waste for insulation or acoustic panels.
  • Agri-bioplastics: connect agri-food producers (organic residues), packaging firms, and R&D centres to explore biodegradable packaging solutions.
  • Water and energy loop: bring together water-intensive industries and wastewater treatment firms to exchange treated water, recover nutrients, or generate biogas.
  • Surplus of heat shares it with a neighbouring company through a local heating network.
  • Offcuts of solid wood get a second life as modular components for circular furniture.
  • A food company with organic residual streams supplies a farmer with a biogas installation.
  • Textile waste water from washing containing interesting compounds for cosmetic industry.
