Context

One of the most important consumer needs of the future will be energy. The technical textiles sector is dynamic and its share is constantly growing. Technical textiles therefore have the potential to enable a new generation of textile materials that contribute to the current and future needs of energy management and its renewable production. The EU-funded SUBBIMATT project aims to address this challenge by developing bio-based and bio-inspired sustainable smart technical textile materials.

The project will establish a safe and sustainable by-design framework and develop different materials essential for the final demonstrators that will demonstrate the benefits in a wide range of energy-related technical end-uses. We will produce bio-inspired smart textile materials (STM) with mechanical actuation, energy harvesting and tunable fabric openness.

The combination of modelling and experimental characterisation will allow the design of the STMs and demonstrators to be optimised and their safety, functionality and energy harvesting capabilities to be predicted.

For the demonstrators, we plan to integrate complementary elements (e.g. sensors, batteries or supercapacitors) from other projects (via liaison).

The results of SUBBIMATT will help to find more sustainable ways to meet the main needs of consumers in terms of living standards: energy, sustainability and comfort. The demonstrators will be products that citizens use on a daily basis, helping to increase visibility and impact.

In this way, we aim to create a positive momentum for the new generation of smart biomaterials and their application in bio-inspired technical end-uses, thus helping the EU (technical textiles) industry to remain competitive and become more resilient while moving towards a carbon-neutral and circular economy.
