Imaging techniques

Centexbel succeeds in imaging four-layer films by combining SEM imaging techniques, EDX and FTIR analysis.

This combination enabled us to characterize the thickness and composition of no less than four layers (PET/ PE/Al/PE).

Hot stage microscope with crossed polarizers

The crystallisation behaviour of a PHBV with softener material as recorded with a hot stage microscope with crossed polarizers

The paste was heated to different temperatures prior to cooling: maximum temperatures of 165°C, 170°C, 180°C and 180°C during 2 minutes.

The video shows the cooling phase from 120°C to 60°C. In this temperature range the paste solidifies into a film and the growth of crystals can be seen. Higher temperatures result in a smaller amount of larger crystals and the formation of a brittle film. We also observed that the crystallisation behaviour depends on the highest processing temperature and not on the cooling rate.
