New Insights into Plastic Waste Management Technologies

The latest Technology Insight Report from the Observatory on Patents and Technology highlights emerging trends in the fast-evolving field of plastic waste management.

The report is accompanied by a new technology platform, which improves access to technical know-how from the field, and updates to the the Deep Tech Finder tool to better connect inventors with investors, fostering innovation and collaboration.

While plastics are integral to modern life, plastic waste poses significant challenges to ecosystems and human health. Encouragingly, the past 30 years have seen a significant rise in inventions aimed at recovering and recycling plastic waste, supporting the transition to a circular economy.

These developments are closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production
  • SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation
  • SDG 14: Life below water
  • SDG 15: Life on land

Together, these innovations mark a promising step forward in tackling one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.

Europe in the lead

With Germany, France, Italy and the UK forging ahead, Europe has consistently led in plastic waste management innovation, accounting for 44% of related patenting activity during the past three decades. Asia also contributed steadily to the growth and now matches North America, with each region of origin accounting for just under 30% of all international patent families (IPFs).

Europe also leads in removing plastics from water and in AI-driven inventions, two key technology areas for sustainability and competitiveness.
