Principle

ISO 17394-2 defines a standardized method for determining the tensile strength of buttons used on garments. The goal is to assess the mechanical resistance of buttons to being pulled off when subjected to tensile force. This is essential for ensuring product durability, preventing choking hazards, and maintaining functional safety, especially in children's clothing or workwear.

Testing Method

The test involves attaching the button to a tensile testing machine via suitable grips. A gradually increasing force is applied in a linear direction until the button detaches from the garment or fails by breaking.

Key elements of the method:

  • Buttons are tested while attached to the original fabric or sample.
  • The force at failure is recorded in newtons (N).
  • The mode of failure is also noted (e.g., button breakage, fabric tear, thread failure).
  • Optional: Environmental pre-conditioning (e.g. humidity or washing cycles) may be used.

The results are used to compare button quality and to ensure compliance with safety standards and internal specifications.
