Context

The European textile industry is facing a major transition as it seeks to reduce its environmental impact, phase out hazardous substances, and embrace more circular and sustainable production practices. Despite ongoing progress, many textile manufacturing processes continue to depend on fossil-derived chemicals, including PFAS-based finishes, petrochemical surfactants, and certain synthetic colorants. These substances raise growing concerns due to their potential toxicity, contribution to environmental contamination, and negative effects on the recyclability and end-of-life management of textile products.

In parallel, European policy frameworks such as the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability, the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles, and the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation are accelerating the shift towards safer and more sustainable alternatives. Against this backdrop, TEX4GREEN aims to develop, validate, and demonstrate innovative bio-based textile solutions that meet the performance demands of the sector while embedding safety, sustainability, and circularity principles from the earliest stages of development. By applying the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework, the project seeks to ensure that environmental and societal considerations are integrated throughout the entire innovation process, from material design to industrial implementation.
 

Objective

The main objective of TEX4GREEN is to develop, scale up and demonstrate bio-based alternatives aligned with the SSbD approach to replace hazardous chemicals used in the textile industry, while maintaining the performance requirements demanded by the market and validating the solutions at TRL 7 in real-life applications.
