La fibre de coco ou coir (de kayaru, corde en malayâlam) est une fibre végétale, naturelle qui entoure et protège la noix de coco, fruit du cocotier. Généralement, la fibre blanche est filée pour fabriquer des cordages et, en raison de sa forte résistance à l'eau salée, des filets de pêche. La fibre brune, plus solide, est davantage répandue. On la retrouve dans des toiles, brosses, paillassons, tapis, matelas, panneaux d’isolation et emballages.

Coconut fibre, coir fibre

Coir or coconut fibre, is a natural fibre extracted from the husk of coconut and used in products such as floor mats, doormats, brushes and mattresses. Coir is the fibrous material found between the hard, internal shell and the outer coat of a coconut. Other uses of brown coir (made from ripe coconut) are in upholstery padding, sacking and horticulture. White coir, harvested from unripe coconuts, is used for making finer brushes, string, rope and fishing nets.

Kokosvezel

Taaie en stugge plantenvezel die afkomstig is van de bast van kokosnoten. Kokosvezel zit in de pulplaag tussen de harde kern van de noot en de buitenste schil. Er bestaan twee types: de bruine en de witte. De bruine vezel komt van rijpe noten en wordt onder andere toegepast in de singels die gebruikt worden in meubelstoffering, voor matten en zakken en in de tuinbouw. Witte kokosvezel komt van onrijpe vruchten en wordt gebruikt voor fijnere toepassingen zoals borstels, touw en netten.
