Matériaux adaptifs

Un matériau adaptatif est capable de modifier spontanément ses propriétés physiques (forme, conductivité, couleur, viscoélasticité...) en réponse à des sollicitations naturelles ou provoquées (variation de température, de champ électrique ou magnétique, de contrainte...). C'est à dire que le matériaux réagit à un stimulus détecté à l'extérieur et adapte sa réponse.

Stimuli-responsive materials (SRMs) have the particularity to change one or more of their properties under a defined stimulus. To account for the variety of underlying physico-chemical mechanisms, we call "transition phenomenon" the process by which SRMs transform an input, or stimulus, into an output, or response.

Stimuli-responsieve of stimuli-sensitieve materialen veranderen één of meerdere van hun eigenschappen onder invloed van een bepaalde stimulus. De onderliggende fysisch-chemische mechanismen worden gestuurd door het "transitiefenomeen" waarbij SRM's een input of prikkel (stimulus) omvormen in een output of reactie.
